Stability of Vlasov Plasma


We study the stability properties of plasma which are of great importance for tokamak physics. The results of recent numerical investigations show the emergence of instabilities at large wave numbers. These short range instabilities are related to the ill-posedness of the equations determining the dynamics of plasma. We focus on the stability and well-posedness of the kinetic Vlasov-Poisson equation and show that exponentially growing perturbations for arbitrary wave numbers exist. This indicates the ill-posedness of the Vlasov equation. The next step is to introduce a regularization procedure in order to illuminate emerging instabilities. Further, we study the transient growth phenomena in the collision-less magnetized Vlasov-Maxwell plasma and drift-kinetic equation.
